Do I need a new avalanche transceiver?

"Do you think I need a new avalanche transceiver?" is a question often asked by freeriders and course participants. Those who ask this question usually know themselves that the answer is "Yes!". Unfortunately, avalanche accidents often reveal that the avalanche transceiver they were carrying was no longer fully functional and should no longer have been used.

In general, the same applies to the avalanche transceiver as to any other emergency/protection/safety equipment on the mountain:

  • Do not use if there is the slightest doubt.
  • Have it checked by the manufacturer or a specialist store.
  • If possible, have it repaired and updated.
  • Buy a new device.
  • Dispose of the old appliance and do not pass it on …

Is my avalanche transceiver broken?

If an error message is displayed during the self-check of the avalanche transceiver, a crack is visible on the device after a fall or impact, a switch is suddenly very difficult or extremely easy to operate or a battery has leaked, the device should no longer be used. Instead, it should be taken to a specialist dealer for a check or sent directly to the manufacturer for inspection. They will look at the problem, check the hardware and/or software and – if possible – repair it.

Is my avalanche transceiver too old?

Not only climbing harnesses and ropes, but also avalanche transceivers have a recommended lifespan. In the instructions for use of each avalanche transceiver or on the manufacturer’s website, you can find out after how many years a device should be checked. With increasing age, the performance characteristics of an avalanche transceiver decrease, which is reflected in the range, for example.

Manufacturers usually recommend sending their appliances in for the first time after three or five years and then annually for inspection. After an appliance service, it is returned with a service report and you can be sure that it can continue to be used without any problems. Such up-to-date logs are standard, especially for rentals.

Clever freeriders and ski guides like to have a second avalanche transceiver with them. If someone notices a problem with their device at the starting point during the avalanche transceiver check (or if someone has forgotten it), the device is simply replaced and the day is saved.

Can a new avalanche transceiver do more?

Manufacturers are constantly striving to further develop their avalanche transceivers. With most devices, improvements and the elimination of minor problems are installed on the existing device by means of a software update. It therefore makes sense to always be up to date. If you can update your avalanche transceiver yourself using an app, you have an advantage in this respect. However, some functions also require new hardware, i.e. a new device.

The following features distinguish the top appliances from the all-round appliances from almost all manufacturers: they are more expensive, have other/additional components such as sensors, extended controls and an extended menu.

For example, if you own an all-round device and also want a backup/standby function (including rescue send), you will have to buy the corresponding top-of-the-range device with this feature. In the event of an avalanche accident, this device allows the person shoveling to switch the device to the special “SEND” mode instead of “OFF” – thus ensuring their own safety.
