Preventive knowledgde transfer

Together with countless initiatives, the snow institute teaches the younger generation preventative, competent behaviour in dealing with snow, ice and avalanches. The aim is to reduce the number of young people killed in avalanches in the Alps to as close to zero as possible.

The search for the perfect line off the groomed slopes is tempting. At the same time, it is alarming to note that the majority of young people do not carry any or any complete emergency equipment. A look at the figures shows that, contrary to the current downward trend in avalanche fatalities, the number of fatalities in the youth age group has been rising steadily in recent years. You can find more facts, figures and data on avalanche accidents here.

Our service
Our goal

We want to reduce the number of young avalanche victims in the Alps to as close to zero as possible by telling convincing and positive stories about the fascination of snow – and in this way raise awareness of the associated risks among the younger generation. In doing so, we do not want to impose bans or point the finger, but rather create added value for society by providing up-to-date knowledge.

To achieve this goal, the snow institute provides the local/regional initiatives with freely accessible and transparent expertise and practical teaching materials. All documents are standardised, up to date and can be easily downloaded and used without much effort. The snow institute materials are an easy-to-combine tool for individualised learning for lessons, ski weeks, avalanche courses or as a reference work.

Who is
snow institute?

snow institute is a virtual institute that was initiated as part of the Arge Alp in cooperation with Land Tirol, Österreichischer Alpenverein and Bergrettung Tirol. The snow institute consists of several initiatives from the ten Arge Alp regions, which work in a network to raise awareness of snow, ice and avalanche risks, particularly among younger people.
